Round 3: Can We Keep It Up! WCWFL 60s 2025
We remain top of the league on a day when we recorded wins over the teams who were occupying the 2nd and 3rd positions at the start of the day but conversely lost to the two teams at the bottom of the table. This goes to show how evenly matched all six teams in the league are, with most games being decided by a single goal.

The playing squad was Charlie N in goal, Pete W in defence, Chris W, Pete C, Graham N and Mark K in midfield and Dave H and Paul W alternating in attack. All performed admirably on the day although Mark only played limited minutes due to being restricted by a minor injury.
Our first game was a 1 v 0 win against 2nd placed Swindon, courtesy of a lovely move finished off splendidly by Chris. We had other good chances and Charlie was rarely troubled in our goal, although we were aided by an opposition player being blue carded for dissent five minutes from the end.
We then played against a revitalised Melksham team, who on the balance of play probably deserved their 1 v 0 win, even though their goal came very late on and was a bad goal to concede from our point of view.
The same result (0 v 1 loss) came in our next game against Devizes, the goal this time coming early on. Although we huffed and puffed putting a lot of pressure on the opposition, we couldn’t find an equaliser, thanks mainly to their goal guardian.
Our penultimate game against Salisbury proved to be one of frustration at the amount of clear goalscoring chances we missed. Although we scored very early on with a crisp finish from Mark after a fine through ball by Pete W, we conceded midway through the game when one of their players was left unmarked at the edge of the penalty area. We had at least four golden opportunities to find a winner but it was not meant to be and the game finished in a disappointing 1 v 1 draw.
The final game against Highworth was a convincing 4 v 1 win with Dave excelling with a well taken hat-trick and Graham with a fine finish for the 4th. At the other end Charlie made some good saves to ensure we rounded off the day in style and, importantly, on a high.
In summary a day that started and finished well after a poor middle, still sees us sitting pretty at the halfway stage of the season. We hope the weather will be a bit warmer on 22nd June which, with all to play for, will suit our preferred CONMEBOL approach.
