Calne Town WFC 70s played their latest games in the GFA WFL in appalling weather conditions at Almondsbury, with heavy rain and high winds, not to mention the cold, making difficult playing conditions. Thank you Storm Éowyn.
We welcomed Steve K to our ranks in the January transfer window, whilst Perry was able to step up as the one youth player (i.e. Over 65 but under 70) we are allowed.
We kicked off versus Merthyr who had beaten us in the first round of games, and with both sides finding the playing conditions far from ideal, a 0 v 0 draw was the eventual outcome, with Charlie making an excellent penalty save following the team collecting four running offences (We were only trying to keep warm of course!).
Next up were Exeter Strollers. The same referee continued to ping players for running, albeit we kept it to three offences this time. Two of these resulted from Perry "scoring" goals which were ruled out - very harsh. 0 v 0 was the final result again.
Our third game was against Abbeymead Rovers who started the day at the top of the league. By then, the rain had stopped, and so it was a much more pleasant playing experience, especially when Perry netted - and on this occasion, and despite the same referee - the goal was allowed to stand. We won by that single goal.
Calne's Results
Calne Town 0 v 0 Merthyr
Exeter Strollers 0 v 0 Calne Town
Abbeymead Rovers 0 v 1 Calne Town
We started the day three points off of the top, and ended just two points away from top spot. With seven games to play, we are therefore right in the mix and look forward to the opportunity to improve on our current position, with a real chance of winning the league in our sights.
