Although we won this league two years ago with most of the players in this photo, the standard of the other teams has improved significantly. And today we did play three teams that inflicted losses on us last year.
First up we played a very strong Weston Super Mare team. Feisty game, and their attack would have given Shergar a good gallop to keep up. We drew 2 v 2 with two fine equalisers from Mel, the first assisted by Graham winning the ball in midfield, and the second assisted by Dave who dispossessed their winger and threaded the ball through to Mel leaving him with just the goalkeeper to beat - which he did with aplomb.
We felt pleased with the overall performance and the result. Lots of good interplay work, although we did leave some gaps for them to exploit.
Next up Methyr. A good side who were cohesive, controlled the game and beat us 1 v 0.
Then Keynsham A, where perhaps we could/should have squeezed a win but had to settle for 1 v 1. Keynsham went ahead and we equalised with a late goal from Graham. Charlie's superb distribution lured two opponents into thinking they could make an interception (when they couldn't), the ball arrived at Laurence's feet (or was it his knees?) who instinctively played a “Maradona like” pass to Graham who went through on his own from near half-way to score.
Then Keynsham B. 0 v 0. Disappointing. Energy levels down. Enough chances to win and enough said.
Calne Town WF 2 v 2 Weston Super Mare AFC
Calne Town WF 0 v 1 Merthyr
Calne Town WF 1 v 1 Keynsham Town A
Calne Town WF 0 v 0 Keynsham Town B
It's early days but, even to reach the heady heights of our 2023/24 final position (4th), we do need to improve for our next game-day on 21 November.
However, well done to the squad and Richard (still recovering from injury) for coaching, and Lorna N for her usual passionate support and photographs.
