Decreased Altitude But Still Flying High - Round 5 Of 60s Wilts League

Image
Bob B, Phil C, Charlie N, Martin P. Jeff D, Mark K, Jon H. Calne over 60s played in the penultimate round of matches of the Wiltshire league on Sunday, winning one, drawing three and losing one, giving us a creditable haul of 6 points from 5 games, particularly as we were without four regular players, missing through a combination of injury, illness and holidays. Our squad were the regulars of Charlie, Phil and Mark, joined by Jeff, Martin, Bob and Jon, on his return from Portugal. We started the day with a 0 v 0 draw against Highworth and were indebted to Charlie who made several excellent saves.   We then achieved the same result against Salisbury but were the better side on this occasion, their keeper making an outstanding save to deny Mark. We were well beaten 2 v 0 by a strong Swindon side who   finished the day overtaking us (update below*) in pursuit of the league title. What followed was a 1 v 1 draw with Devizes, in a game we really should have won. We went ahead wit...

More Downs Than Ups In 65s Wilts County WFL

John W, Steve P, Phil C, Perry K. Jeff D, Andy G, Ollie S This was the last match-day in the Wilts 65s league and we started with a squad of 7, of whom 2 (Perry and Andy) were already struggling with injuries. We started well with a 1 v 1 draw against Swindon who were joint top at that stage, and one of 2 sides who could win the league. In the end, that draw cost them their opportunity to do so.  But as injuries kicked in big-time, we lost 3 v 0 to Highworth (eventual league winners) and 2 v 1 to Salisbury (by which time our chance to overtake them to finish in 3rd place had disappeared), before finally withdrawing from our last game against Cirencester due to not being able to field a team. So a disappointing first season in the newly established Over 65s league, but we know we can do better than that. So roll on next season and the chance for us to put things right. And congratulations to Highworth Town Walking Football Club for sealing the deal, thanks to all participant...

At It Again In Abingdon

Image
Perry K, John H, Ollie S, Phil C. Graham N, Mark K, Paul W. An enjoyable way to start the week, helped by the the rain staying away until we'd finished our football. The regular visit to Oxfordshire saw hosts Abingdon Almost Athletic, Highworth Town, Charlbury Town and Calne Town slugging it our for bragging rights in another friendly round-robin.   We got off to a good start against AAA with Mark scoring the only goal of the 20 minute match and racking up three points with a 1 v 0 win. Next up was Highworth, who had our usual keeper, Charlie, in goal!! We took advantage of this added incentive to score, which Paul, Mark and Charlie himself duly did - a  close quarters shot from Paul came in hard and rattled the post before hitting the diving keeper on the back of the head and crossing the line, and t his is now recorded as Charlie's first ever goal for Calne Town Walking Football Club.  The defence played their part under mounting pressure, making sure only a single goal...
