At It Again In Abingdon

An enjoyable way to start the week, helped by the the rain staying away until we'd finished our football.
The regular visit to Oxfordshire saw hosts Abingdon Almost Athletic, Highworth Town, Charlbury Town and Calne Town slugging it our for bragging rights in another friendly round-robin.
We got off to a good start against AAA with Mark scoring the only goal of the 20 minute match and racking up three points with a 1 v 0 win.
Next up was Highworth, who had our usual keeper, Charlie, in goal!! We took advantage of this added incentive to score, which Paul, Mark and Charlie himself duly did - a close quarters shot from Paul came in hard and rattled the post before hitting the diving keeper on the back of the head and crossing the line, and this is now recorded as Charlie's first ever goal for Calne Town Walking Football Club.
The defence played their part under mounting pressure, making sure only a single goal was conceded, giving us a 3 v 1 victory.
We controlled the third game and dominated possession and shots on goal, but Charlbury put up a stoic defensive display and saw out a goalless draw, with our guest goalie John having very little to do and a MotM performance from their goalie.
Then came the 'knockout' stage with Calne playing Abingdon for a place in the final. But two cracking long range goals from Perry still wasn't enough. It's a very rare event to have any opposition score as many as five goals against our defence and well done AAA on securing the 5 v 2 victory!
Highworth won 2 v 0 in the other playoff game against Charlbury which meant we play against Charlbury for 3rd or 4th and Highworth play Abingdon for top spot.
Subsequently Calne secured a 3 v 0 victory against Charlbury with goals from Mark and Paul sandwiching a rare goal from Phil, and Highworth secured top spot with a 2 v 0 victory over Abingdon.
After a mixed bag of results for all teams, and an enjoyable morning of football as per usual at Tilsley Park, the heavens opened up and players from all sides retreated to Boundry House, for a bite to eat and a beverage.
Until next time... cheers!
