Calne over 60s played in the penultimate round of matches of the Wiltshire league on Sunday, winning one, drawing three and losing one, giving us a creditable haul of 6 points from 5 games, particularly as we were without four regular players, missing through a combination of injury, illness and holidays.

Our squad were the regulars of Charlie, Phil and Mark, joined by Jeff, Martin, Bob and Jon, on his return from Portugal. We started the day with a 0 v 0 draw against Highworth and were indebted to Charlie who made several excellent saves. We then achieved the same result against Salisbury but were the better side on this occasion, their keeper making an outstanding save to deny Mark.

We were well beaten 2 v 0 by a strong Swindon side who  finished the day overtaking us (update below*) in pursuit of the league title. What followed was a 1 v 1 draw with Devizes, in a game we really should have won. We went ahead with a goal from Mark after an assist from Jon, but conceded a penalty due to our 4th foul infringement, from which they scored, with what was virtually the last kick of the game.

Our final game was a 1 v 0 win against Salisbury, through a well taken goal by Jon after a pass from Mark. Unlike the previous game, we successfully managed the remainder of the game for a vital 3 points.

A real collective team performance with Charlie pulling off some excellent saves as usual, Jeff and Phil extremely diligent in defence and Martin, Bob, Jon and Mark all working tirelessly in sharing the midfield and attacking duties, in the absence of any natural forwards.

*With Swindon B dropping out of the league and a lot of recalculation, past results have been adjusted. Consequently, the figures from Wilts County Walking Football League are sparse, with no results from today and no results and table published from Round 5 (June 30).

However, going into the final round of games we sit at the top, and with a head-to-head against Swindon... it's in our hands!
