It's All kicked-Off! WCWFL 2025

Image
On a mild, dry day at Green Lane, Devizes, t he stage was set for the Calne 60s to start their journey, with the sole intention of going one better than  last year's second place.   Perry K, Charlie N, Chris W, Graham N, Dave H. Pete W, Mark K. We got off to a flyer against Salisbury with a 3 v 0 win. Some good movement throughout and some well taken goals from Perry (x2) and Mark (x1). The defence was well marshalled by Pete, and keeper Charlie was not really troubled. The second game against Highworth was very competitive and very even. Charlie was a lot busier and despite taken an early lead from Chris W who poached a goal from the goalkeepers parry we found ourselves 2 v 1 down following two long range efforts. However, Perry was brought on as super sub and got the equaliser with a couple of minutes to go. 2 v 2. In the third game we came back down to earth with a bump. Swindon won 3 v 1 and thoroughly deserved their win, and our consolation was a well taken...

A Pre-Season Trip To Vilamoura

Image
Dave H, Manuel D, Rob H, John M. Phil C, Ollie S, Jon H, Stuart B. A depleted Calne squad of six finally made it to Vilamoura last week - Stuart B, Phil C, Jon H, Dave H, Rob H and Ollie S.  Our first morning there saw us take on three sides at the regular Browns sessions. It was hot, the pitches were BIG, and we were facing many players who were still in their fifties. We also faced new rules such as the first individual running offence meant one minute in the bin, the second one two minutes etc etc. It was no surprise therefore, that this session was a big learning for us, and we lost 2 games by 1 v 0, and drew the third game 0 v 0. A not too unusual result for Calne Town, being quite mean in defence, but profligate in attack. It was also no surprise when Ollie became the first (but not our only) player to be binned for running! On Thursday, we provided some useful opposition to the Browns ladies team who needed an opponent to give them some practice before they compete in an up...

End Of 2024/25 Season - 70s GFA WFL

Image
There's no CTWFC 70s squad photograph, so here's an image of our new flag. We played the last series of games in the GFA 70s league in glorious sunshine, which made a pleasant change. However, what didn't change was our ability to take the chances we created and to convert more opportunities into goals. We drew 0 v 0 with each of Exeter Strollers, Bristol Utd and WSM  (which was a friendly) , and 1 v 1 with Bournemouth. We finished in 4th place in a league of 10, and since both Bournemouth and WSM finished above us, we can at least claim to have got something out of two well-established and organised teams in the league. We only lost two matches from the eighteen we played, which was the lowest number of defeats other than the eventual winners - Keynsham Town A, who lost just one match - to CTWFC earlier in the season. Nevertheless, we were the draw specialists with twelve of our eighteen games ending honours even. Our aim next season must be to turn at least half of thos...

Blacks and Greens 60s - 6th and Final Matchday of GFA WFL 24/25

Image
On the last matchday of the GFA WFL 24/25, Calne's Blacks & Greens again saw some movement in their league positions; the Blacks moved up and the Greens moved down. The overall team performances and final positions where reflective of EPL's Arsenal and Tottenham - they have the potential and desire to take top place, but can never quite manage it - next year is our year! On that note, congratulations to Weston-Super-Mare on taking the champions spot for 24/25. And a big thank you to the organisers at GFA's Oaklands Park, the referees and all the teams and participants who, together, make this an enjoyable challenge regardless of the final results :o[ Greens Andy B, Perry K, Chris W, Charlie N, Geoff R. Pete W, Martin P. The Greens started with a comfortable 2 v 0 win against Hereford with goals from Perry and a last minute effort from Geoff.  Our next game against Barry was a slow start and they had several efforts on goal in the first five minutes. Fortunately our goal...

Melksham v Calne 65s Friendly

Image
In front of an unusually large partisan crowd, Melksham 65s made their team debut vs Calne at Devizes. Many of the Calne team had played the day before in the Gloucs League, and with 5 of our 7 being north of 70, the question was whether we could keep up with the fresh and youthful legs (including Abbi's) of Melksham. Tense start between these local rivals. We played three periods, and our game plan was to build on our defensive strengths, contain Melksham forwards and get counter attack quickly. First period we went 2 v 0 up through two fine goals by the returning Paul, the first from Richard's interception, and the second from a through ball from Graham. Paul hit the bar three times as we nullified Melksham attacks and countered quickly. Same pattern of play for the second period. We went 3 v 0 up through a first time shot from Graham, taking advantage of slack passing in the Melksham midfield. The third period opened up, but Melksham couldn’t find a way through and Paul rou...

Blacks and Greens 60s - 5th Matchday of GFA WFL 24/25

Image
GFA WFL 60s 2024/25 On a mild, sunny morning the gloves and beanies were abandoned, and this round of matches would be played in two halves, giving each team the opportunity to play with their backs to the sun. Let's see how the Blacks and Greens got on... Greens Chris W, Perry K, Charlie N, Geoff R. Mark K, Jon H, Martin P. Calne G reens over 60s team picked up a decent haul of 8 points from 5 games in the penultimate round of Gloucester League fixtures.   In the absence of a number of regular players due to holidays and injury the playing s quad was boosted by the late addition of Martin who performed very well in defence when called upon. The players on the day comprised Charlie , Jon, Martin, G eoff , Chris , Mark and Perry .   Our first game was our only reverse of the day, going down 1 v 0 to an improving Cirencester team , who deserved their win.   A creditable 1 v 1 draw followed against second place Abbeymead Rovers, the goal coming from a long rang...
