Melksham v Calne 65s Friendly
In front of an unusually large partisan crowd, Melksham 65s made their team debut vs Calne at Devizes. Many of the Calne team had played the day before in the Gloucs League, and with 5 of our 7 being north of 70, the question was whether we could keep up with the fresh and youthful legs (including Abbi's) of Melksham.
Tense start between these local rivals. We played three periods, and our game plan was to build on our defensive strengths, contain Melksham forwards and get counter attack quickly.
First period we went 2 v 0 up through two fine goals by the returning Paul, the first from Richard's interception, and the second from a through ball from Graham. Paul hit the bar three times as we nullified Melksham attacks and countered quickly.
Same pattern of play for the second period. We went 3 v 0 up through a first time shot from Graham, taking advantage of slack passing in the Melksham midfield.
The third period opened up, but Melksham couldn’t find a way through and Paul rounded off the evening with a third goal for his hat-trick and an overall 4 v 0 friendly victory.
A good performance by the team. Very controlled and calm. Solid passing and the win was deserved.

Charlie in goal had a good game stopping a series of very long shots from Melksham's Nigel. Phil and Jeff were against strong and impenetrable at the back. Dave worked well in defence and attack, and Richard played well in midfield. Graham played his usual midfield role, and Paul was impressive on his return upfront.
Thanks to our hosts Melksham and well done all.
