Calne Greens over 60s team picked up a decent haul of 8 points from 5 games in the penultimate round of Gloucester League fixtures.
In the absence of a number of regular players due to holidays and injury the playing squad was boosted by the late addition of Martin who performed very well in defence when called upon. The players on the day comprised Charlie, Jon, Martin, Geoff, Chris, Mark and Perry.
Our first game was our only reverse of the day, going down 1 v 0 to an improving Cirencester team, who deserved their win.
A creditable 1 v 1 draw followed against second place Abbeymead Rovers, the goal coming from a long range shot by Mark following a nice lay off by Perry.
What followed was a comprehensive 3 v 1 win over Highworth, their consolation goal coming very late on in the game. Two goals from Mark, aided by assists from Chris and Jon and a long range effort from Perry putting us in such a commanding position.
The final game was something of an anti climax, a 0 v 0 draw against a very hard working Keynsham Yellows team. Perry came closest to scoring with their goalkeeper making a fine save from a finely struck shot following a free kick.
All in all a fine effort by all the team, with Charlie again making many important saves, Martin performing admirably in defence, Geoff working hard switching between defence and midfield, Jon and Chris getting up and down the pitch and chipping in with both assists and goals, Mark starting in midfield but moving up front as his mobility was slightly hampered by a recurring calf injury, with Perry reverting to a defensive role, which seemed to improve both performances and results as he helped to dictate play from the back and also chipped in with a well taken goal.
The final round of fixtures are to be played on Thursday 13 May, with a top five finish still within sight.

Phil C, Graham N, Sion H, Rob N. Andy G, Jeff D, Tony N. |
On an unusually sunny day, the Blacks Seven took the field at Almondsbury in the penultimate round of the Gloucester League. Our team was debutant Rob N in goal, Jeff D, Phil C and Andy G defending, Sion H and Graham N in midfield, and Tony N upfront. We kicked off with 3pts in the bag as Bishop Cleeve did not turn up, and then started against our four adversaries; three of which we have not won against before. First up, old rivals Highworth. We ganged up on our friend Mel M to nullify his threat and then took the lead by a fine effort and move by Tony. Highworth’s lively sub equalised mid way through the second period, but we moved upfield to quickly get the winner. Tony passed to a tightly marked Graham, whose back was to goal, marked by two defenders. Improvising, a cheeky back heel from Graham found the net and we won 2 v 1. A good start! Next up Cardiff. They beat us well last time and so we had to defend as a team. They took the lead early in the second half from a great flowing move, but we hung in there and Tony grabbed an equaliser with an opportunistic first time finish close to the end, capitalising on indecision in the Cardiff ranks. 1 v 1. Another good result. Keynsham Reds next. A strong side challenging at the top of the league. We defended stoutly but conceded a late winner from an overload. 0 v 1. Disappointing as we played well and nullified most of their threats. Last up, Barry Town. They looked like a good side but we had a few breakaways and from a throughball from Graham, Tony put away the winner in the first half. 1 v 0. Overall a good day. 10pts; 3 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat. Rob played well in goal, and held Cardiff and Barry at bay with a number of splendid acrobatic saves. Jeff, Phil and Andy were tough tacklers, quick to block, and they put up a great defensive screen. Sion and Graham held the midfield together and supported the defence well. Tony fought well upfront, largely solo, and deserved his three goals and could have had more. Well done all.
