History repeated itself when, for the 2nd season running, CTWFC finished 3rd (out of 24 teams) in the Herman Finkers trophy at the Almelo City Cup.
The squad, seen above, performed well against opposition from Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and England, again ensuring the club returned with silverware.
On Day 1 we finished top of our group with 7 points from 3 games beating a team from Belgium called Walking Bears 3 v 2 with goals from Mark, Perry and an own goal, FC Utrecht 2 v 0 with Nigel and Mark scoring, and drawing against VFL Wolfsburg 0 v 0.
On Day 2 we finished second in our group with 4 points from 3 games, beating VFL Wolfsburg 2 v 0, drawing against Raspo Osnabrück 1 v 1, with Abbi scoring our goal, then losing to the eventual winners of the competition from Belgium, Esservee Old Stars 0 v 2.
We then lost in the semi-final 0 v 3 to Iserlohn, before drawing 2 v 2 with Cleethorpes Walkers in the 3rd/4th play-off match with goals from Mark and Terry.
The deciding factor in determining the award of 3rd place for CTWFC was our positioning in the fair play league table, as voted by the referees and other officials throughout the tournament.
A very good achievement, particularly given that Perry was unable to play in many games due to his ongoing recovery from injury but still contributed significantly, as did all the players including international tournament debutants Andy and Terry.
The Almelo City Cup is an annual international walking football tournament consisting of three different cups, each named after famous people from Almelo; Hendrie Krüzen, Herman Finkers & Ilse de Lange. Additional awards are given for most team goals scored and fair play.
